In early April, beauty chain darling, Sephora, will start offering free makeup classes to cancer survivors. Entitled Brave Beauty in the Face of Cancer, the free classes are part of Sephora's Classes For Confidence initiative, which offers 90-minute classes for "women in transition." According to the Sephora website, this group includes women re-entering the work force, former military members, cancer survivors, and other women who are about to embark on a new chapter of their lives. During these hands-on classes, Sephora makeup artists work one-on-one with the women to address specific beauty needs on everything from filling in eyebrows to applying foundation. More importantly, they help the women build confidence in themselves.
The focus of the classes isn't on sales, but rather the what, why, and how of utilizing beauty products and making sure that attendees have the knowledge and experience necessary to re-create their desired looks at home. Each woman also gets to take home a gift bag of products so they can continue to try new looks & practice after the class has ended.
To measure the effects of the classes, Sephora asks participants to complete a survey after their hands-on session. Darla K. Watanabe, a BSN, RN, PHN, & Director of Supportive Care Programs at the Stanford Health Care Cancer Center had this to say about the program, "I have to say that every time I tell someone about the Brave Beauty class I well up! It was one of the most inspirational mornings I have experienced. I’ve seen some of the women since that class and they are still raving about their experience…they loved being in the Sephora store and for a while, they could take their mind off of their concern. I am just in awe.”
Sephora has set a hefty goal of working with 100,000 women in the next five years through their Classes For Confidence program. They are well on their way to hitting that goal, having already served more than 1,750 women in the 200 classes they have held to date.
The classes, scheduled to begin April 9, will be open to individuals, organizations, and groups. For more information on participating in these classes or about the program, please visit https://www.sephorastands.com/classes_for_confidence/.
