Celebrity stylist, photographer, award winner: the list goes on and on for NAHA 2017 Stylist Of the Year, Damien Carney. We recently caught up with Damien to learn more about his pro tips for recently licensed salon and spa professionals. Here's what he had to say.
Keep your tension even and consistent throughout the haircut for greatest control. Work neatly like a surgeon. Messy sectioning and uneven tension shows in the end result. But always work with the natural texture, hairline growth pattern where possible. Clean, well-planned out sectioning is vital to your end desired result. Messy sections equal messy end results. Keep your sections clean and with purpose, map out your haircut and the rest will fall into place. want my clients to look and feel beautiful when I'm finished.
When I'm in a studio shooting, I only care about what the camera sees. I will move around the model and or subject until I find a focal point that I can capture. So only worry about what you can see through the camera. Learn to see your work through the camera lens. It's a whole other world to see your work from a different perspective.
On Face Shapes
I always study the face shape when I'm consulting with a client. Every face shape is different every facial feature is different. I focus on the positive features and then hide, distract or camouflage the weaker features. I'm always working towards creating one face shape and that is the "oval." I also study the client's body shape, hair texture, hair line growth pattern, lifestyle, color, and/or styling product to complete my look.
On The Details
When the hair is completely dry, go back and refine any areas that might require further refining. It important to see and read the hair when its dry and in its natural state. Always add your mark and personality to your work. Your clients will appreciate all the fine detail work
On Checking Your Work
Always, always check your work, but don't do it at the end. Take control and cross-check as you go along. That way there is less room for errors and it's a better way of getting to end target goal. Perfection.
