The nail industry is moving so fast that it is hard to keep up with all the new nail trends and fashions. In this business, your clients count on you to be the expert and to give them the low-down on what’s on-trend. And as such, you must do your part to stay on top of what is trending in the industry. Although we may not always know all things at all times, we can set a goal to stay current and strive to keep our clients informed. Read on to find out how you can be a nail trend boss.
Social media: Social media is perhaps the best way to stay abreast of new nail trends and fashions – and it’s constant! New nail artists and veterans are posting their best work on Instagram and Pinterest constantly, so it would be wise for you to find the leaders in the industry and follow them.
Read and subscribe to trade and beauty magazines: Trade magazines provide a wealth of information about nail trends and they are a very good source for step-by-step tutorials for trendy nail art and styles. Additionally, trade magazines provide information on classes and free manufacturer training on new products.
Beauty magazines pride themselves on reporting the latest and greatest trends in not only the nail industry but also the fashion industry. Beauty and fashion go hand-in-hand and where you find trends blossoming in one area you are likely to find an influence in the other. So stay close to fashion to stay up on the nail trends that complement new styles!
Subscribe to beauty blogs: Find leaders in the nail industry and subscribe to their blogs. These are the people who are usually closest to the up-and-coming trends and they write about them from first-hand experiences. Subscribe to beauty blogs that are written by top nail techs, and nail product companies. Mix up the blogs you read so that you can get different perspectives.
Go to shows (both local and national): If you plan to stay relevant in the nail industry, you must attend industry shows! Many new trends are born and/or introduced at major tradeshows. Being there will not only get you first looks at what’s coming around the block, but it will also give your access to the pioneers who create the trends. The extra bonus is that you will meet other nail techs who you can network with to stay on top of trends.
Join professional groups: Whether in person or online, get connected with other nail techs. You can learn a lot from just be being in the company of other professionals. In many cities, you can find small groups that meet to discuss industry news and if you can’t find one, create one! Another option is joining nail tech or manicurist groups on Facebook. There are tons of them out there where you can find just about any topic you desire from nail art to acrylic.
Do a little digging: Lastly, do your own research on what new trends are coming for each season. Search for articles online by looking up specific trends that you’ve heard about. Find out what writers and bloggers are saying about what’s new on runways and beyond. By seeking out new information you can become a contributor to the conversations you're having with other nail techs.
Staying current with nail trends should be the rule, not the exception if you want to keep growing and stay relevant in the business. You not only have a responsibility to yourself to learn new things, but you also owe it to your clients to be a leader in what’s new in your industry.
