Everyone wants to make more money, but how do you do it without working more hours or raising your prices? Here are three ways to earn more without working more.
One way is to add on a service to a client’s appointment. This increases revenue fast, and if you're providing retail for them to purchase, it adds up very quickly! If you are building your book, and your day is filled with haircuts, think of all the other services you could offer to fill in the open appointments.
Here are a few suggestions for add-on services:
Straight Razor Shaves
Here's an example of add-ons at work: you charge $30.00 for a men’s haircut and you have spots to fill and you already have haircuts booked, upsell them and you could make $60.00 with one client instead of trying to book more haircuts.
When you are looking to fill your open spots during your days, think of calling, texting or emailing your clients telling them you have space after their appointment and recommend another service after the haircut. It’s really about being confident in what you do and letting clients know about the other services you offer. Calls and texts not working? Use social media (think Instagram or Facebook stories) to fill in your gaps.
How does this translate into more money? If you are working an 8-hour shift and take 30 minutes for your haircut, you will need to do 16 haircuts to have a full book.
If you offer other services, you could cut down the number of haircuts you need to do to fill up your days by utilizing the haircuts already coming in and upselling them to do other services.
When thinking of retail to increase your bottom line, here are a few things to consider:
Likes and Needs of Your Clients: Who are your clients, what do they need/like when it comes to retail? We know guys shampoo, condition & style their hair but not everyone has the same needs, so make sure when you are looking at a product line to bring into the shop that it has a couple options for different hair textures and needs and it has a range of styling products.
What Product Line to Bring In: You don’t want a small drug store in your shop. If you have a 4 - 6 chair shop, one line with a variety of options will work just fine. If you are a larger shop, then consider two different lines to accommodate the range of clients coming in.
Confidence in your Recommendations: The best way to get clients to purchase retail from you is having confidence in the products you have in your shop. The more you know and understand about the products you offer, the more comfortable you will be in talking about them and the more your clients will purchase them from you.
The fact is, clients who purchase products from you are more loyal to you and your shop. Retail is one thing you can discount because of the markup; this is where you can have fun and make offers to incentivize them to book other appointments. When introducing new services think of a product that matches that service and offer it at a discount if they book the service.
