Shearious Question: Customers Who Don't Tip

SHEARIOUS QUESTION: Recently, I've noticed that tips vary from client to client. Some offer a very genrous tip at the end of their service and some don't tip at all. How do you let them know you work for tips?

SITUATION Review: To tip or not to tip, that is the question many customers face when they frequent a restaurant, fancy hotel, salon or spa. Regardless of where you work tipping is voluntary and it is usually commonly understood among consumers that when receiving services if (and that is a big IF) the service provided was worthy of a tip then it is customary to tip between 10-20%. One definition of the word ‘tip’ is:  small present of money given directly to someone for performing a service or menial task; gratuity. If you struggle with customers who do not tip there may be several reasons why. Perhaps they can’t afford to pay anymore then the service price. They may not feel that their service experience is worth a tip, and they may not even know that it is expected and ok to tip.

SOLUTION: Look at the facts. Are ALL your clients really not tipping? Or does it FEEL like no one tips? Discerning the difference will help when deciding which tactic to employ. If none of your clients tip then simply talk with your manager or owner and together you can come up with some ways to encourage tipping. Sometimes a simple sign at check out that says, “Tipping is appreciated but not expected.” Or “We accept tips”. You may also do a price increase so that you are earning more for the service itself. Last, but certainly not least, take a good hard look at the service you provide. It may not be worthy of a tip and only you can fix that.

GROWTH OPPORTUNITY: When you have an expectation such as ‘expecting to receive a tip’ and that expectation goes unmet there is always upset. The opportunity you have if you are upset about clients not tipping is to realize that you have an unmet expectation. The first step is acknowledging that and then ask yourself, “what am I doing or not doing that is causing my clients not to tip?” Fix what you can and forget about the rest. Just try to remember that a tip is a present (a gift) and it should not be expected but rather appreciated.
