SITUATION: Lately, I've been reading a lot of stories about stylists giving back to the industry in incredible ways. I really want to start giving back, but don’t know where to start.Help!
SITUATION Review: Nothing is better than a cheerful giver! How awesome that you are not only desiring to give back but inquiring about the best ways to go about it. There are some questions you may want to ask yourself (if you haven’t already done so) as well as some things to be aware of.
SOLUTION: The first question to ask is, “What do I have to give?” It will fall in one of three categories; time, talent or treasure. If you have time and are looking to mentor someone or perhaps serve at a local charity or with a mission team then your search would begin with finding and aligning yourself with organizations that you feel an affinity for and that you would enjoy giving your time to. Research and then reach out. Local business chapters are always looking for mentors for new members and organizations big or small are always more than happy to give you the 411 on their needs. Perhaps you have a talent that you want to share. You may be really skilled at selling and have a desire to help other team members or professionals improve their selling skills. Talk to your manager or manufacturer and find out if they have a need for specialized training. Lastly, perhaps you are too busy to give time or talent away but you’ve got a little extra cash that you wouldn’t mind giving to those in need. That is fantastic and trust me there are plenty of causes that could use the cash. One note of caution, don’t be afraid to ask how much of your money will actually go to those in need. Knowing that only 20 cents on every dollar you give actually goes to the person or persons in need may change where you direct your funds. Regardless of your choice to give time, talent or treasure the important thing is to align your strengths with a cause or activity that can use what you have to give the most.
GROWTH OPPORTUNITY: Stepping out of a life centered on ‘self’ and devoting more attention to ‘others’ will develop an entirely new set of skills. You will find a deeper more meaningful purpose to your life and be better because of it. Thank you for desiring to serve. Good luck.
