I am not a rule follower when it comes to makeup. I say if you want to use an eye pencil on your lips or lipstick on your eyes – go for it! It’s all about being innovative and finding the best way to for you to express your art. Here are a few of my favorite brushes and how I like to use them.
Flat Definer Brush
Typical use: Cream eyeliner, eye shadow
Try: Clean up under brows. Dab brush in concealer or a foundation lighter than skin tone and softly underline the eyebrows. Make sure to blend this out so it doesn’t look harsh. When I don’t want to use any product, I saturate the brush in a little rubbing alcohol and use the same way.
Small Fan Brush
Typical use: Dusting away fallout or applying highlighter
Try: Applying mascara, especially bottom lashes. This tool is wonderful for professionals as it is a way to keep your mascara sanitary without using disposable wands. I also like to use this after applying false lashes. It helps blend natural lashes without applying a lot of product. Check out our video on applying extensions, tinting, or perming lashes to see exactly how to give clients a little extra flair.
Fluffy Blending Brush
Typical Use: A staple for eyeshadow blending
Try: Using this to apply cream products. I love this brush for under eye concealer. It flawlessly buffs the product into the skin.
Typical use: Either to apply lip product or sometimes used for eyeliner
Try: Using to apply glitter or shimmer to inner corner of the eye. The angle of a lip brush is perfect for the shape of the eyes and since its designed to handle cream products well, I spritz with a setting spray and dip in glitter or loose pigment then apply.
Flat Foundation Brush
Typical use: To apply cream foundation
Try: This may not seem too outside of the box, but I apply all of my client’s moisturizers and primers with this brush. It is smooth and relaxing, and I almost always have someone comment that it feels like a mini face massage.
